I won't repeat old defenses of Silverman here, (though I do take offense at
your tone sir, and am considering challenging you to a duel) but I do
think it might be time to challenge the cult that has grown up around
Community. I have seen every episode of the show, and will continue to do
so (reliable reports are that it will return to our screens before the
season is done, and has a good shot at coming back next year). However I
thought towards the end of last year, and definitely this year, Community
is showing too many symptoms of having smoked its own shit. This is not
uncommon, especially among sit coms, where the creative forces start
reading too many of their darling reviews, fanmail and fanboards, and start
becoming self-derivative. It isn't particularly funny, or edgy, or
envelope-pushing, just because somewhere near the start of the episode they
wink at the camera and tells us they are about to be funny, edgy and
envelope-pushing. If I ran a network I would insist that show-runners and
their writing rooms get locked in at night to sleeping quarters in the
studio, and never be allowed access to the internet - this has ruined a
long list of at one time promising shows.

That said, I did appreciate the Betelgeuse gag, though I did not notice the
walk-by until it was pointed out (I did notice and wonder why they were
referencing the character repeatedly, but did not imagine they were going
in that direction - I thought maybe someone on the show had also worked on
the film).
