Adam Carolla and Kevin Smith had a falling out over a TV show they were supposed to do together. I first became aware of it after listing to Carolla's podcast of last week. Carolla brought his agent, James "Baby Doll" Dixon, onto to show to give his side of the dispute. Dixon is of note because he was representing both John Stewart and Jimmy Kimmell when ABC approached Stewart to replace Kimmell as its late night host. This was an interesting chapter in Bill Carter's latest book. It turns out Kevin Smith did Carolla's podcast last year and told Carolla they should be doing a TV show together. There was some discussion about this back and forth. Then it turns out Telepictures, which is a unit of Warner Brothers, approached both Carolla and Smith about doing a half hour comedy show to pair with TMZ. There were some communication issues. This was discussed ad naseum on Carolla's podcast this week when Smith came on to give his side of the dispute. But the two were not talking or emailing. Telepictures signed Smith. Carolla had a deal for $500,000 he signed on a Thursday. Then on Friday Telepictures called and said the deal was off, that Smith did not feel he could work with Carolla. Smith said there were a couple of things that led to the decision in addition to the lack of communication: Carolla did some gay bashing jokes that cost Smith some fans and Smith was expecting Carolla for a podcasting event called PodDammit and Carolla said he was never aware of the event. Carolla ends up bashing Telepictures, calling them one of the worst businesses in Hollywood to work with. I didn't listen to the very end, but it sounds like they've pretty much patched up things. Smith complained to Carolla about being called a liar by Carolla's wife, Lynnette, on her Twitter account. Fer Chrissakes, she's got fewer than 13,000 followers. How sensitive is he? http://twitter.com/lynettecarolla
Also, when Dixon came on Carolla's show, he had Jon Stewart call in and chat for five minutes or so. This is interesting because around Thanksgiving Carolla said he expected to do a podcast interview with Stewart, I think during a trip to New York. It never happened. I find it interesting he couldn't get Stewart for a podcast interview, even though they had the same agent, but when his agent wants to draw attention to a podcast where they kick around Kevin Smith, suddenly Stewart is available. Here's a Variety article on the dust up written before Smith's appearance on Carolla's podcast. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118049335?refCatId=14 The status of the show isn't clear, by the way. Carolla last week called it dead. Smith told an interesting story on Carolla's podcast how TBS showed interest as having it follow Conan O'Brien. Smith said everyone at TBS was interested in the show and it seemed a go until Conan looked at it and O'Brien killed it. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
