I studied Murrow a bit back in college, so I know a few things about "Person to Person." First and foremost, it existed in a vacuum of celebrity interviews -- they just weren't common in those days, which is why the series generated numbers. Second, Murrow wasn't very good as host in comparison to the other things he did better. Third, most if not all of the Murrow P2P were live or filmed live.
Looking at the current concept, there is an onslaught of celebrity news on TV and the internet, too much for an upstart to break through successfully. I suppose they stuck with tradition by choosing Rose, who is among the worst interviewers in the history of the craft, but that isn't exactly a positive. Lastly, I see nothing about the series being live or live to tape, which might at least lend itself to event television where anything could happen.
