As has been noted elsewhere, the curious thing about this is the casting. They've picked Jonny Lee Miller to be Holmes. Miller co-starred with Benedict Cumberbatch in the acclaimed National Theatre production of Frankenstein directed by Danny Boyle last year in London (I saw it at a live cinema screening, since the short run completely sold out). Cumberbatch and Miller alternated the roles of Frankenstein and the monster between performances (Miller played the monster in the version I saw). And Benedict Cumberbatch is of course the star of the BBC Sherlock playing the title character.
Given that The Mentalist is also effectively a take on Sherlock Holmes (as is House), and that the BBC is doing an excellent version, while Robert Downey Jr does something different in cinemas, I'm not at all sure where CBS is going with this. I like Miller, and there's nothing wrong with multiple takes on things - how many Hamlets do we see. But it does feel like we've all the Sherlock Holmes we need right now, and CBS is just setting itself up for a fall - certainly critically. And with that Hannibal series, it does seem as though we're drinking at very creatively dry well.
