I believe Lieberstein's narrative on this - they were a little nervous about how the show would transition, and wanted Spader to hedge their bets. Andy as boss is mostly Michael-lite, and does not really make sense in the context of the back story of the characters, but it does allow the show to maintain its basic dynamic, while highlighting the still-delightful supporting cast. I guess they have been laying the foundation for the Dwight spin-off the last few episodes, but it is hard to tell which of the other cast members they are going to send over - I assume not everyone who went down to Orlando. -- TV or Not TV ....
