The 1999 Mel Gibson movie is a favorite of mine. I have not seen it in some years, and it never seems to be available on netflix or amazon. I had the urge to watch it over the weekend (thought it would make a good double feature with "History of Violence", which I was also thinking of seeing again. I feel a little guilty bitching about not being able to easily find Payback the way I wanted to, when we live in an age when almost any film is available one way or the other in my house (Cable, On Demand, Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, Hulu). I searched through my many options yesterday, and found to my delight that it was available on Spike, so I set a recording and figured I would watch it later. Then I notice that Spike edits the hell out of their movies (or at least has a lot of commercial breaks, but I am assuming there is some content loss also).
Payback is available from Amazon and Vudu and ITunes, but only for sale at $9.99, not for rental from any of these sources. My question is this: What are the factors that make some films easily available for rental, and others only available for purchase? Does an outlet like Spike have some kind of exclusive claim on this film for some long window? -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
