Yes, you are correct -- after Rivers was fired, he was one of a series of guest 
hosts, eventually being named the "permanent" guest host due to his relative 
ratings success. That was really moot, though, since "The Late Show" was being 
canceled for "The Wilton North Report" (and Arsenio was committed to film 
"Coming to America" anyway).

By the time "Wilton North" tanked, and Fox decided to revive "The Late Show," 
Arsenio had his Paramount talk show deal -- the new incarnation started with 
rotating guest hosts, but they never found "another Arsenio," and eventually 
named Ross Shafer as permanent host. Permanent until the next time they 
canceled "The Late Show," and this time replaced it with nothing.
