Last night's SNL was nothing special - except for the musical guest. I had
not been familiar with Gotye before this, though the song "Somebody that I
Used to Know" did sound vaguely familiar (my daughter disdainfully informs
me that it is one of the most popular sings of the last year, but somehow
it never popped on my limited musical radar).

But it was not just the song (which I did like), but the way it was
performed that stood out to me as a return to the best traditional of
musical performance on SNL. There was a kind of minimalism (was Gotye
playing his iPad at one point?), while highlighting a sense that something
kind of special was going on. I thought it was cool (but then, as I am
constantly reminded around my house, I am, apparently literally, the last
person on the planet who has a credible opinion about what cool is).
