To be fair, some shows lend themselves to finales. "The Fugitive" is
an easy example. Ending the war was an obvious thing to do with
"M*A*S*H". Whether or not it actually worked, "Lost" needed to answer
its ongoing questions.

More often, imposing a finale is awfully arbitrary. Either the series
ends without a serious change to the show's milieu (like "Hill Street
Blues" or "Cheers") or there's a mess like "Seinfeld".
