I've read the first and second novels in the Star Trek: Department of
Temporal Investigations series and thoroughly enjoyed them both. Not
only do they do a seemless job of merging the various Trek series (and
mirror universes), but they are good sci-fi. Best thing about the
second novel is that, due to the subject material, it serves as both
sequel and prequel to the first novel.

The books take the two men sent to DS9 to investigate Sisko and his
crew traveling back to the Tribble episode of TOS and dives head-first
into what their jobs really entail. Almost every character who ever
experienced time travel in the Trek mythology is covered in the books.
And, intentionally or not, the books function to correct, explain, or
poke fun at a lot of inconsistencies within the Trek universe.

And they are just fun to read. They are certainly more fun than the
Vanguard series, which is a much better premise poorly executed.
