I should clarify: there are exactly three cable shows that we watch: Mad Men, The League, and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. I am of the opinion that I'd rather buy than rent. Therefore, I'd rather just get a season pass on iTunes and watch them that way instead of going through a rental model of Netflix or Hulu. Since we are a MacOS household, an AppleTV works to stream everything from our "media server" (aka a 2005 PowerPC G5 iMac). But we watch enough OTA series that it's easier for us to rip those off the TiVo until the DVDs come out. My old TiVo is a Toshiba with a built-in DVD burner, so that's how we got those off in the old days (now we have AT&T Uverse, which does not play nicely with my TiVo).
In an ideal world, I'd just get a Mac Mini, plug in the EyeTV I picked up a while ago, and skip the TiVo altogether, but considering we're just saving up for our first HDTV and can get the TiVo for $0 (with the one-year commitment) as a very long-term customer, barring a significant financial change, we're going this way for now.
