Lately, studios have been fighting the discount DVD rental companies in
order to prop up and save the shrinking home video market. Warner Bros. is
trying to push a 56 day delay on films with Netflix and Redbox (which I
think Netflix conceded to, with a 28 day gag order as well). Universal and
Fox have also got Netflix and Redbox to agree to a 28 day waiting period,
though the two seem to have gotten pricing concessions on this. Disney is
not offering as much in concessions if any at all in its request for a 28
day waiting period. So, now Netflix is pulling a Redbox against Disney with
Redbox -- they're going to buy Disney movies at retail so people who missed
John Carter at theaters (given its B.O., a lot of people missed it) will
get a chance to rent it sooner at $1.50 (Redbox) than otherwise.
