Perception, Eric McCormack's newest TNT effort, starts next week and seems
closer to "The Mentalist" and "NUMB3RS" than "Lie to Me."  McCormack's
character is a neuroscientist, but doesn't appear to based on any specific
individual.

Partly yes, which is why I do not particularly dump on the show, which I think
was in the middle of the field of the typical CBS-procedural. But partly I just
mean that the show did not really even intend itself to be based on the actual
psychological science of memory. The phenomenon they base the show on has been
described in the literature (infrequently), but beyond the basic existence of
the phenomenon the show was not really in any self-conscious way tying itself
to the psychology of memory.

This is in contrast with another recent procedural that did intentionally tie
itself to psychological science - Lie To Me. I found that show both more
entertaining, and more infuriating, than Unforgettable. More entertaining
because it was just a little more daring and unconventional (and better written
and acted); infuriating because that show was based on two real psychologists
and their very well known research program, and the show blithely stormed
through any inconvenience in the facts to make their dramatic points.
