Julian Goodman replaced Brinkley on the NBC Washington bureau night desk 
for his first job with the network and convinced his bosses to pair the two 
as 1956 party convention anchors, which led to "The Huntley-Brinkley 
Report"--as NBC president he sparred with the Nixon Administration on 
network news coverage (can you see that today?) and signed Johnny Carson to 
his first $1M contract for "The Tonight Show":
