I don't want to address political news in this comment. That is, when
people see a line about dropping confidence in TV news, the answer
will relate to political news, about objectivity, fairness, Fox News,
and whatever. My opinion on that is that campaign managers, media
advisers, and think tanks jumped a generation ahead of the capacity of
TV news, both local and national, and the news doesn't yet have the
ability to catch up.

Outside of political news, national and local TV news are awful. If a
person tunes in to the news on any day in order to get some insight
into what is going on in the world, that person will end up sorely
disappointed. Local news has stopped covering city government and only
gives time to state government when the governor signs an important
bill or a local legislator sends them a press release about a
submitted bill and then the anchors/reporters do not bother to give an
opinion as to whether the bill will ever see a vote on the floor. The
daily national newscasts could not adequately explain the subprime
lending bubble burst and what it meant to viewers. 60 Minutes did the
best job using longer form stories.

TV news is reaping the reputation they have sown for many years.
