Tom Davis was hired with his partner Al Franken as writers for the then-new "SNL" in 1975 (they were called collectively "The Guys") and he became part of the show off and on, with and without Franken, from then until 2003--in the last years of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players he appeared on camera with Franken in the show-within-a-show "Franken and Davis Show" and co-created the Coneheads and Dan Akroyd's infamous Julia Child sketch, among many others--he also wrote his "SNL" memoir in 2009--throat and neck cancer was cause of death: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/20/arts/television/tom-davis-saturday-night-live-comedy-writer-dies-at-59.html?_r=1
