I'm not even sure I want to research this, but the first I've heard of this theory was that it was aired by the nut Alex Jones on his radio show. That said, I would not rule out the possibility of the NRA jumping on the theory (or a 'more respectable version' of it). That is what they think "Fast and Furious" is -- a Rube Goldberg plot to erode the Second Amendment.
