I suspect that some of it is a holdover from the days when Ebersol (and Roone before him) would decide what would be on next as the one-network coverage went on, where it was easier to not be specific. (Also, if fans of a given sport didn't know when theirs would be on, they'd be more likely to sit through other coverage.)
