His career spanned the stage, movies and TV and he was the theater 
department chairman at Howard University--perhaps best known for playing 
Elijah Muhammad in "Malcolm X" and Malcolm in "Roots:  The Next 
Generation," where he got an Emmy nomination (but he won the Emmy that year 
for his then-steady role on the daytime soap "One Life to Live"):
