I think Hardwick has schlepped at a variety of things until he found something 
that stuck.  As best as I can tell, he's been working the nerd angle for at 
least five years.  His podcast empire is sizable, so if he's not in the talent 
pool for future late night hosts, he probably hosts the podcast of a few who 
could.

That's not to say he couldn't be a fraud, but Wil Wheaton vouches for him, so 
I'll need a lot of evidence.

Personally, I think there can be more than one nerd king (and/or queen), but 
YMMV.
