Don't forget that Carson owned his show outright (like Dave does now), 
which gave him the rights to all residual revenue (like home video sales 
and the syndicated "Carson's Comedy Classics").  So while Jay is getting 
more money for fewer eyeballs, remember that Carson was also picking up 
money on the back-end that NBC couldn't touch.
