I just got to it this evening. It is the best new show I have seen so far (I
am going to watch Elementary before I go to bed probably).

It was either Siskel or Ebert who had a rule that there were no bad movies
set on trains; I have a similar rule about submarines. Crimson Tide is one
of my favorite films, and I appreciated the play on their central conflict
in this pilot. My rating of the show has been adjusted downward as I realize
it will not be set entirely (or even mostly) on the sub.

I will definitely keep watching, but feel constrained to note that while it
likely is the best new network show of the Fall, it is not even close to
being as good as, say, Sorkin's much-bashed Newsroom. Even discounting for
the genre differences, the writing, pacing and acting on LR were
significantly inferior to The Newsroom. Braugher is a fine actor, and even
when he is a bit stilted or melodramatic gets a lot of bonus points from me
for the quality of his previous work, but the rest of the cast is TV-average
at best (though I do dig that hot chick I remember from that Dollhouse show
a while back).

My point is simply to reiterate the obvious - context is huge. Last Resort
stands out among a bunch of pedestrian competitors (I am suffering through
the second episode of Revolution as I write this, mostly out of loyalty to
JJ Abrams - so far it is tiresome, and makes me look back with fondness on
Jericho).
