Is it possible that this might backfire in the same way that some consider
Jimmy Kimmel's recent Emmy's gig did?  That is, various forces, or his own
judgment, may have MacFarlane taking it down a couple of notches and reducing
the chance of something different happening during the event?

Though now that I type that, with MacFarlane's singing chops, taking it down a
couple of notches may just look like a Martin Short job of hosting.

I might actually tune in next year.  Sure, that might be using the DVR and
rushing through the commercials and other filler.  But I'm curious enough to
take a look.

>Him: "It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the
Oscars. ... My
thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the
high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope
they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast."
>Producers Zadan and Meron: "We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the
Oscars. His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making
the show entertaining and fresh. He will be the consummate host, and we
are so happy to be working with him."
