The congenial leading man type (whose series as an actor included "The 
Sixth Sense") was probably better known for hosting the long-running "Hour 
Magazine," a program that in an 80s landscape of daytime talk dominated by 
Phil Donahue and Oprah Winfrey's brand of issue-oriented programs (soon to 
descend into the tabloid muck of Geraldo and Sally Jessy and all of those 
shows to follow in the 90s) remained a steadfastly blander mix of household 
hints, cooking and parenting segments--Mr. Collins parlayed "Hour Magazine" 
into hosting the Miss America pageant for several years:
