There are several interesting and worrisome aspects to this story. Jones
did not just "find religion", and he did not just join an extremely
conservative, sectarian denomination. He has joined an extreme and
fanatical sub-culture of that extremely conservative sectarian
denomination. This sub-culture is dominated by what are best described as
conspiracy theories.

It is unfair and misleading for me to point out that David Koresh and the
Branch Davidians were also an extremist derivative of the Adventist church;
the people Jones is hanging out with are unlikely to be violent, and are
still part of the institutional denominational structure. But if you take
the Branch, remove the violent and sexual fetishes, and dial down the crazy
about 50%, you will have a feel for what these guys are like. I am not
worried that Jones is going to do something violent, but I can say that
most people who are sudden converts to a group like this (as opposed to
having been born into it) tend to have some very serious psychological
problems. If he were my relative I would be only slightly less worried than
had I heard he had become a methamphetamine addict. I don't know anything
about this kid (I have never seen this show) - the best possible outcome is
that this is some kind of passing phase and 6 months from now he has shaken
it off.
