As of Friday, for the first time in about 22 years, I am without cable TV. We noticed that the majority of shows we DVRed are from OTA broadcasts, so I dropped AT&T UVerse, bought a TiVo Premiere (along with an HDTV to replace my analog one from 1997) and an Apple TV (we have a vast library of TV shows from DVDs and original broadcasts on our 2005 iMac). The two shows we watch on cable (Mad Men and SpongeBob SquarePants) will be purchased via iTunes (I might add Sunny and The League if and when I get around to watching the episodes I already have). We don't plan on getting Netflix or Hulu Plus because (a) I'm a buyer, not a renter and (b) we've found that there isn't much on there that interests us from the cable channels.
Price absolutely played a part in this: Even though we only paid around $80/month for the U200 package, we felt we'd rather spend this money elsewhere. I will probably spring for Fox Soccer's online package for my Chelsea fix. I'm doing a little research on using Tunnelbear to tap NHL Center Ice (assuming I'll still give a rat's ass if/when the sport resumes) and MLB.tv. As for F1, since Bernie and the gang don't have any online package (as far as I could tell), I'll be using "other methods" to watch the races (and setting my alarm). Just a mention.
