The WaPo TV critic summarizes how the late night talk show hosts addressed the tragedy last night, the first night back:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/tv-column/post/late-night-tv-hosts-grapple-with-how-to-handle-news-of-newtown-shooting-video/2012/12/18/b7aa9f8e-491f-11e2-ad54-580638ede391_blog.html?wprss=rss_homepage I saw Dave of course, and was impressed as usual with his ability to deal with issues like these in the context of his show. His 7 minutes at the desk were maybe a little more rambling than he usually is - no doubt like every father in the country he was having difficulty talking about this without weeping. What was even more touching for me was the slight pause right at the start of his monologue, when he looked at his studio audience and, I felt, us at home, and then asked "how are we doing?", and it was crystal clear, even though he did not reference the shooting then, and went to to make jokes, what he meant, and that he was checking in with us and letting us know that he was going to do his silly tv stuff with a broken heart. I was wondering how Leno dealt with it - Morales says neither he nor Fallon addressed it at all, implying that the SNL kids choir was NBC's company wide statement. I am not judging them - there is no easy or good way to do this, and it makes sense that each host would do it in the way that best fits their personality and strengths. Dave is right in the CT area of course, so it would be even harder for him to ignore it - though you might think Fallon would say something. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
