Mini rant follows: This only lends credence to my long-held theory that if the left stopped mentioning the lunatic fringe pundits on the right (and vice-versa), they would simply go away. We were almost through with Rush Limbaugh at the start of the Millennium, but then the left started responding to every dumbass thing he said, giving his voice more weight, and he regained a position at the top off the mainstream media food chain. People like Jon Stewart and Keith Olberman share the blame for perpetuating people like Glen Beck and Donald Trump. I shouldn't know the names of the boobs on "Fox & Friends" -- nobody should -- but I do because I watch "The Daily Show." Think of the publicity the whack-job conspiracy theorist got when he went on Piers Morgan's show a week or two ago... I'm shocked that guy didn't whip it out and masturbate on the set of the show. For that matter, people shouldn't comment on Piers Morgan's barely sensical rantings, either. It is like bickering teenagers, each unwilling to let the other have the last word. Somewhere amidst all the other idiots on TV, we stopped talking and thinking about Sarah Palin, and -- presto -- she went away. The other thing that would help crack down on these lunatics is if the New York Times refused to count books purchased by the author or publisher when it tallies the numbers for the bestseller list. Somewhere in the continental US is an abandoned missile silo filled with unread copies of Bill O'Reilly's unread "bestsellers," no doubt adjacent to the silo holding all the copies of L. Ron Hubbard's "Dianetics." There are good ideas out there, but they get crushed under the weight of morons, and the idiots who either intentionally or unintentionally prop up the morons. I have seen lucid debates about gun control on both Facebook and Google+ in recent weeks, but (and I've broken my own rule and tried watching news broadcasts) all I see on TV are loud-mouthed, closed-minded pundits who babble talking points and don't listen to anybody else. If they aren't willing to participate in a free and open exchange of ideas, give them the boot and bring on people who are. If I wanted to watch a freakshow, I'd go to the circus. -- Kevin M.
