Just saw a segment on a KCET (former PBS turned indie station in LA) show that might explain part of the reason why, beyond focus groups stating they liked the challenges more than the other segments. The studio/hanger/news/fastest lap bits were all shot at what is now known as the Great Park in Orange County, built upon the remains of a closed airbase. Problem is the Great Park -- which was expected to be Orange County's version of Central Park in Manhattan -- has suffered from lack of development and potential theft or misappropriation of the $200 million already invested in the project. From the footage shown from the park's singular "attraction," a hot air balloon, the former runway area where the track used to be looks to have been jackhammered away, and the hanger seems to have been partially demolished, too. Unlike England, which has disused airports that could be converted into race tracks, Southern California's airports are all going strong. Scouting another location might be difficult. Given that, I could see the producers saying, "The track is gone, the hanger is wrecked, and people seem to like the challenges the most anyway, so let's focus on that." Maybe wild speculation on my part, but it seems sound. http://www.kaltura.com/index.php/extwidget/openGraph/wid/0_sv76olyg -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
