In 1986, David Letterman told a story on the air about how he had just attended the 500 and brought friends along, telling them to get ready to be blown away by Nabors' rendition of the song. But Nabors was out sick, and Letterman was upset to see he was replaced by a childrens' choir conducted by... Mickey Mouse. (Paul Shaffer cracked, "I hear he can't even conduct. His arms are all over the place.") Oddly enough, Nabors has never even lived in Indiana - he's from Alabama. He got asked to sing the song in 1972 because the speedway owner was a fan. -Tim
