Full disclosure: I know one of the contestants on the show, which was -- frankly -- the only reason I watched
I misunderstood the premise. I thought the teams had to design their own giant robots to fight in the arena, but it turned out they merely had to learn to operate the robots which had already been built for them. So I fail to see why they needed contestants who were experts in the fields of robotics and computers and mechanical engineering. Perhaps in later episodes the teams must somehow customize or repair or alter their respective robots, but from the pilot episode, they could have put anybody into the chair to fiddle with the controls that operate the feet (someone with an athletic background operates the hands of each robot, but -- again -- it appeared any human with two moving arms could handle that task). I'd liken the show to "Battlebots" or "Robot Wars," except the focus of "Robot Combat League" is less on the fighting (only the final third of the episode featured a single fight) and more on the contestants. The editing is sophomoric... they reduced my friend to a ditzy blonde stereotype with a single sentence, one of only two sentences she was given in the pilot episode. Based on the low-level of skill required to operate the robots, I think the series would be more fun if kindergarteners operated them. They'd be more enthusiastic, less melodramatic, and the resulting "combat" would be roughly the same.
