I can't help but wonder if this is (partially) a test balloon to see how the TDS audience responds to someone other than Jon Stewart as the lead voice of TDS. It's literally been a whole generation since Craiggers, and TDS and Stewart are so closely linked, I wouldn't be shocked if a) Stewart isn't looking ahead to bigger, if more stressful, things - especially given the retirement rumors floating around both Leno & Letterman, and b) if Comedy Central wants to make certain that TDS will remain a viable tentpole without Stewart.
As for the movie, it could certainly be a compelling story if told correctly. We know Stewart hasn't had the greatest of success in Hollywood comedies - maybe he'll fare better with drama.
