I'm not a fan of these tedious feature-film re-imaginings of classic
or hoary television properties. "The Wild Wild West" movie was
particularly awful, and "I Spy" was pretty bad too. As for "The
Avengers," I will cop to loving the '60s run with Patrick Macnee and
Diana Rigg. And I wanted to love the film, but I think it was a pale
and flaccid imitation of the TV show.

Like the series, the movie hinged on the the core relationship of
Steed and Mrs. Peel, and there was no hope that Fiennes and Thurman
could approximate the chemistry, glee, wit, and warmth that Patrick
Macnee and Diana Rigg brought to the characters - particularly with a
feeble, clumsily camp script. The retro vibe seemed stilted rather
than charming, and all of Connery's bluster and even the talents of
Jim Broadbent, Fiona Shaw, and the criminally wasted Eddie Izzard
couldn't save the proceedings.

Then again, Ed makes an interesting point. If the film hadn't been
branded "The Avengers" and the lead characters hadn't been named Steed
and Peel... Nah, it still would've been a bomb.
