This summary of an interview with Jeff Zucker's boss (Phil Kent, CEO of
Turner Broadcasting) seems like a good example of what is wrong with CNN,
not a prescription for fixing it:

I understand that news is a business, and CNN needs enough viewers to
justify ad rates and subscriber fees. But if the top decision-makers really
do think of their business as creating stars that generate fans, then any
hope of CNN ever coming close to again deserving the dignified voice of
James Earl Jones is completely gone. Another bad sign is that Kent seems to
see the number one problem as convincing a significant number of viewers
who left because they bought into FN propaganda that CNN was too liberal to
come back. That strikes me as Playboy spending a lot of energy trying to
convince guys who left it for Hustler that it can be raunchy and tasteless
too. CNN lost me as a viewer (not a "fan") when I finally became convinced
that the CNN brand was no longer a reliable indicator of actual news
content. It does not look like there is any reason for me to think that
might change in the foreseeable future.
