I don't know where Ed has been. Local news has been like this for 15 to 20 years. The biggest recent change is that they have to cut salaries, so they're dumping a lot of high-paid veterans and replacing them with pretty faces a year or two out of college who work for a lot less. "If it bleeds, it leads" has been the motto for a significant number of local newscasts since the 1990s.
