Marc Maron did a nice little article about his encounters with Winters: http://www.xojane.com/entertainment/jonathan-winters-biography
If you never saw it, there was a limited release pseudo-documentary on Winters that, I think, is on Netflix and is worth checking out: http://www.tvornottv.net/2011/03/25/certifably-jonathan/ And, as if we needed to bring things full circle, here's Roger Ebert's pan of the film (basically, Ebert would have liked an actual documentary more than the mock one that was produced): http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/certifiably-jonathan-2011 Also, if you'll indulge me, we lost another great man today, though I doubt most of you knew of him. But in an age where college coaches are being revealed as abusive and overaggressive, Frosty Westering stood out for coaching in a loving and gentle manner. He turned down offers to coach pro, and Sports Illustrated once nicknamed him "the winningest coach in football history." My friend Chris Egan is a sports anchor up in Washington state, where he and I both got to know Frosty a bit at our alma mater, Pacific Lutheran University (Egan began his broadcasting career providing commentary for our school's football games on the college's on-campus TV station... I was the director of the games... Frosty was the coach). Those of you who know me know I'm not a sports fan -- such things didn't slow Frosty down a bit. His ability to motivate us is the stuff of legend. Here's Egan's retrospective on Frosty: http://www.king5.com/sports/Frosty-Westering-PLU-football-obituary-191734041.html Those of you who are my friends on Facebook and who want to see what happens when a non-sports fan directs sports coverage, search "Big Play Football" amongst my posted videos, but don't say I didn't warn you.
