At his death, he was editorial director at CMT (and we presume that with CMT's current emphasis on reality shows and Gordon Ramsay reruns, he spent more time on the web site), but Flippo was a well-respected critic and writer specializing in country and roots music--he was Billboard's Nashville bureau chief for many years and among other books wrote an acclaimed biography of Hank Williams:
