NBC could also shove him off to Oxygen or one of the other lesser viewed
networks (like Cloo or Chiller)

NBC Sports Network. That could work. (Bravo, uh-huh. He's not exactly
Kathy Griffin.)

If there were an obvious home for a motoring program in the Kabletown
universe, this 'problem' would be eminently solvable.

As for the quarterly arrangements, I'm not sure it worked in the case of
Larry King, though it may have wrt Ted Koppel. Of course, what it means for
these agreements to work likely differs between these individuals.

The NBC programming chief said that he hoped that Big Jaw would continue to
be a presence on the network "like Bob Hope," who continued to appear in
specials until he could barely stand--and the Drudgie Leno asskissers
continue to suck up in the comments and refuse to accept that Leno's done:

Greenblat saying this only makes even a little bit of sense if it is a pro
forma attempt to be graceful and polite to Leno (and more importantly, his
many fans that NBC hopes to retain) on his way out - that is, as an offer
that is expected to be rejected. It makes zero sense as an actual proposal.
The article notes that Hope had not been a host of a regular late night
show, and that when Leno took over the Tonight Show his predecessor
disappeared, but does not explicitly draw the relevant conclusion. Carson
has the grace and class to leave the stage clear for Leno to make his own
way; one wonders what might have happened if Johnny was doing a 10:00
primetime show the first 6 months of Leno's Tonight Show. If NBC, and Leno,
are capable of learning anything from past experience, they will realize
that they need to give Fallon a Leno-free environment and 12 to 18 months to
find his own way with the show.

If Kabletown really wants to still be in business with Leno, they should
give him some kind of quarterly or, if necessary, monthly special on Bravo
or something. Fallon could have him as a very special guest once a year;
hell, in 5 years they could even have Leno come back and host a series of
roasts for Howie Mandel and Pat Sajak and the like. But they must keep Leno
off of NBÇ for at least 12 months, and never give him any kind of a regular
show again. And if Leno had any class he wouldn't accept it if offered.
