I think that was more inferred by the viewers (especially those who've read the 
book) than implied.  I remember the publicity right before the show premiered 
saying that it wouldn't necessarily be tracking the events of the book, and 
that they'd written the 13 episodes with an "open" enough ending that the story 
could be continued if CBS decided to renew it for another season.
