This smooths out our understanding of this event quite a bit. The montage was long in planning, and as of a couple of weeks before the show was going to lead up to a Robin Thicke performance, but not because Colbert knew Daft Punk would not be on the show, but because he knew they refused to perform. What is not explained is why the VMA's allowed Thicke to appear on Colbert but not DP. I suppose it is because Thicke has been everywhere already, and DP's allure is based on how rare their media appearances have been (my daughters, appalled at my lack of DP awareness, and insulted at my condescending attitude towards them based on the little I have recently learned, have been trying, unsuccessfully, to educate me). It does now though seem possible that DP also began to worry that Colbert's plan for their appearance (in which they refused to either sing their song or talk) was going to make them look silly, and that they asked MTV to give them an excuse to get out of it. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
