First getting noticed in the UK as the host of the live Saturday night comedy show "That Was the Week That Was" (and later the U.S version), he then became a serious talk show host in both countries and a ubiquitous host of other programs, a producer, the founder of London Weekend Television, London's weekend ITV franchise, an author and raconteur-- his greatest triumph was the series of Richard Nixon interviews in 1977, when he had been dismissed by most people as a purveyor of lightweight television like the equally ambitious Dick Clark or Ryan Seacrest over here:
