The story is that the National Science Foundation had given NPR a grant for a weekly call-in talk show on science. Since it was only once a week, to fill the other four days of the week "Talk of the Nation" was created (and the full title of the Friday show was "Talk of the Nation: Science Friday," with the same theme music). Eventually, when Flatow took over the production of the show from NPR, it became disattached from "TOTN" (although "TOTN" still didn't air on Friday), but when "TOTN" was dropped for NPR to bring over "Here and Now," that show stayed five days a week while "SF" was still available to stations. Flatow must've decided that it might be a good time to get out of NPR and made the deal with PRI.
