Perhaps as insurance for hiring Carrie Underwood to play Maria (and more
cred from the snipers at Broadway World and All That Chat), the Dec. 5 live
telecast of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical will feature some people
with both TV and Broadway credits in supporting roles: Audra McDonald
("Private Practice") as the "Climb Ev'ry Mountain"-singing Mother Abbess,
Christian Borle ("Smash") as the impresario of the festival where the von
Trapp family appears (just think of the howls that would've come if they'd
cast Ryan Seacrest in that role) and Laura Benanti ("The Playboy Club" and
"Go On"--that's right, two bomb NBC series) as the main squeeze of Capt.
von Trapp (Stephen Moyer of "True Blood"):

It should be pointed out that Benanti's Broadway debut was in the 1998
revival of "Sound of Music," where she understudied original Maria Rebecca
Luker and then took over the role. I'm sure there are some on the Broadway
boards who will argue that it's not too late for her to replace Underwood.
