The good news is that there are different directors listed for each of the
two parts of the season 2 finale; the first part was merely a little
disappointing, and I don't think you will have to be embarrassed talking to
your friend. The bad news is that the second part of the finale was simply
horrid. It was rank. It was insulting. It was easily the worst thing I have
ever seen with Sorkin's name on it.

Apparently the finale was completed before the first episode of season two
even aired - it is possible that at the time Sorkin assumed it would be the
final episode of the series. It certainly reads like that - though even
that is no excuse. Either that, or Sorkin was working under the direction
that he needed to make the characters more likable, so he set himself up to
completely re-invent the show in a possible season 3. I won't be surprised
if in episode 1 of season 3 we find out that the whole gang has decided to
move to Minneapolis and due a local news show together for a year.

The acting on the show is still mostly great; even Jane Fonda, who has not
really been great as an actress since sometime around Klute, did good work
this season, and even had some great scenes in the two part finale. Most of
season 2 was actually quite good (if not yet great), much better than
season 1. Making the badness of the finale all the more galling.

It actually is not yet really clear that season 3 will happen; from what I
have been able to read, even though Jeff Daniels tweeted a third season was
a done deal, HBO is apparently saying that they are looking forward to
working out the schedule so they can do it, and the hold up seems to be
Sorkin's schedule and desire to do it (he is working on a couple of movies
- about Jobs and the Chicago 7).

See, for example (but note there are spoilers on the finale, though in this
case I should call them "savers", as reading them might save you from
having to watch it:
