The central question here seems to be why Logan and CBS News did not know
what Davies had said to the FBI, but apparently every other news
organization that looked into the matter seemed to pretty easily find out
(Washington Post, New York Times) - and that CBS News itself was able to
find out within hours once it decided to look into it.

The memo from the in house investigator notes that this was a problem, but
gives no explanation. It does provide a hint however, at the end noting
that Logan had publicly expressed the view that the Obama Administration
was under-estimating the terrorist threat a month before she started
working on the story (see below). I thought Logan was Will McAvoy in this
story, but it turns out she was the DC douchebag who made the story up.
(Well, she did not literally make the story up, or falsify video; but she
does seem to be the one who blindly rushed through a story without doing
even basic fact-checking, apparently because she had reached a conclusion
before she even started her reporting.

Excerpt:

"In October of 2012, one month before starting work on the Benghazi story,
Logan made a speech in which she took a strong public position arguing that
the US Government was misrepresenting the threat from Al Qaeda, and urging
actions that the US should take in response to the Benghazi attack. From a
CBS News Standards perspective, there is a conflict in taking a public
position on the government’s handling of Benghazi and Al Qaeda, while
continuing to report on the story."
