I've heard these industry-generated claims before. Not to get overly
political, but it is the same argument against so-called Obamacare, that it
is somehow cost prohibitive to provide choice for consumers. What it would
actually do is eliminate the current business model and replace it with
something new. Old jobs would be lost, new jobs would be created (the
article skips the concept of new jobs entirely). The most ridiculous claim
is that we run the risk of losing so-called niche channels; we lost niche
channels almost as soon as we got them. TLC isn't about learning, A&E is
about neither art nor entertainment, and there is no such thing as the
SciFi channel.

I've often very publicly supported a la carte cable, but I've moved past it
as an option, as have consumers. The world is on demand now, and there is
no such thing as network loyalty amongst viewers anymore. This article even
concludes with the proposition viewers "cut the cord" completely. Cable
networks ought to be bending over backwards to provide viewing options to
consumers, everything from apps to web streams to PPV boxes to freakin'
hand jobs. Instead, the industry allows middlemen to keep calling the
shots, giving the shaft to content creators and audiences alike.
