It is surprising to me to see that they only did the show together for 7
years (82-89). While I remember watching Hugh with Barbara as a kid, and
saw a lot of Bryant and Katie and Katie and Matt, I think it will always be
the Jane and Bryant version of Today that will be prototypical, and I think
the high water mark of the program. I was not a regular morning tv watcher
during the Brokaw years - he was good of course, and his paring with Jane
was arguable better than Bryant's, but only seeing them periodically makes
it resonate less deeply with me.

I grew up with both Brokaw and Gumbel as fixtures in LA local news, and as
a big sports fan was shocked and delighted when Gumbel made the move over,
which is probably why I stated watching Today more regularly as a young
adult. Bryant is a lot of things (arrogant and aloof being two of them) but
he is also a smooth and skilled broadcaster, and well suited for that
morning show job.
