Today several gathered at Griffith Park to remember Huell's contribution to the region. I've made a lot of fun of him over the years, as I made fun of Mr. Rogers, too. But in time I've come to appreciate the value of what both men did, Fred Rogers for making all kids feel welcome in his neighborhood, and Huell Howser for making me appreciate the value of my own neighborhood. The places in Southern California that I consider iconic are that way in my head because Huell visited them.

I fail at that all the time, but take a look at the wonder on Huell's face at any given time and you know that man had not an ounce of cynicism inside of him. I envy that. -- Kevin M.
