On one hand, they do seem willing to blow out those reality shows when there is severe weather out there (just a couple of hours ago they were pre-empting reality shows for live coverage). On the other hand, the old Weather Channel, for all of its tackiness and geekiness, had a genuine interest in providing information and a realization that viewers didn't stick around very long (they even had promos for prime time in which a TWC anchor would plug an OTA network show that night and say something like "and during the commercials, get the forecast for tomorrow by tuning to The Weather Channel." Today's TWC may have Local on the 8s, but they seem to be stuck into getting those quarter hour ratings at all costs--which is the problem every cable channel with a radio-style format seems to have had, from HLN to TWC to MTV and VH1. They become scared of the thought of someone only having them on for a few minutes.
