I like Harry and have thought for some years he was a natural to make a
judge. He is clearly an improvement over recent years, and the show itself
as a whole so far seems to have taken a step up. I know for many the show
stopped being pop culturally relevant about 7 years ago, but it is still
one of the most watched programs on television, and it is interesting to
see television professional tinker with an graying product to revitalize
it. AI has tried and failed to do this the last couple of years, but they
may be on to something this season. Connick is both likable and a bit of a
stickler (as he has shown when he has been a coach), which allows him to
adopt the mean guy role. There were times when it was a bit forced (they
went for too many scenarios where he said no, she said yes and left a few
dramatic seconds for Urban to angst and then decide - mostly yes), but that
dynamic does seem to be a much better formula than what they had last
season, when the tension had very little to do with the evaluation of the
singers and everything to do with either phony or absurd conflict between
the judges. It helps that Jenny is about 1000X more likable than Mariah,
and she actually has opinions even when she winds up just saying yes. I
don't get Urban's appeal, but a significant number of viewers (women I
guess, or maybe guitar fans) seem to like him, and what I don't understand
is mostly inoffensive.
